Avi's New Year's Resolutions

. . . are FINALLY going to be satisfied this year

OK, OK, it's finally time this year to hold fast to my New Year's resolutions.

Last year, my first on the planet -- well, let's just say I had no willpower.

BUT this year, I'm holding fast to my proclamation that I'll:

- STOP reading three newspapers' comic section every day

- QUIT reading the back of cereal boxes at the breakfast table

- FLOSS daily (I've got 8 teeth now! Count'em!)

- STOP complaining that the Yankees are spending more each year than mom is for my voluminous supply
of diapers.

Now that I'm spilled the beans on my resolutions, what are yours?! See you next year! Love, Avi

FirePerson Avi Learns How To Spell Hanukkah -- Err, Chanukah; Err, I Mean Hanukah

. . . and did you know that I rescued the one-day's supply of oil with my personal fire truck?

And, to top that feat: I made the oil supply of one day last for eight! -- so I'm already an environmentalist that is Green just like the old Hebrews back then with the Macabees or whichever tribe that was where I conserved all that petro.

Happy Hanukkah (!) (See, I spelled it correctly.

Introducing "Avi's Classic Video Channel" (VIDEO, below button)

Some of my most creative ideas happen when I cannot sleep.

So I got this light bulb of an idea for a new blog feature the other night when I was tussling.

In between thinking about my 401K and how much candy I've lost, I decided "Avi's Classic Video" would
bring you some of my BEST past videos here.

Dad and Mom, for example, enjoy the video you see here because I'm only four months old, yet flash my first smile if you watch this brief video carefully.

I even say "urp" at the end....My first utterance, though now I know at least 40 words, including:

- Dad
- Mom
- Mommy
- Mamma
- Shoes
- Bird
- Glass
- Car
- Truck
....and many more.....Love, Avi

Avi's Devil-Good Time: Halloween Fun Party #1

. . . and "I wonder why people keep calling me a 'Little Devil'?"

At the Halloween Party today, I made a Colorful Pasta Necklace (with Mommy's help); got huge bubbles blown at me by the Bubble Lady Extraordinaire (I just learned that word today reading the NY Times crossword puzzle); and fixed the USA's $969 billion dollar debt (All I needed was my extra Band-Aid and some duct tape.)

Anyway, enjoy Halloween 'yerself, OK? You betcha', dair hey.

Can I have your Dove Bar Truffles from your Halloween Bag, if you don't want them?

Avi's The Halloween Scare Crow......

. . . but he does NOT lack for courage, oh my.

He's handing out our Halloween candy at the door soon.

But first he's gotta carve his 12th pumpkin.

He's got more scary pumpkins on the porch than he has teeth in his mouth (six).

By the way, Avi's answer to you is that he'll take BOTH a trick and a treat. He's easily pleased.

(Finally) Walkin' My Talkin' (****VIDEO EXCLUSIVE****)

One small cliche for mankind, but one HUGE step for me (PLAY THE VIDEO!, below).

As a matter of fact, you'll see about 20 huge steps in the video.

Oh no: I gave away the plot.

Sorry.

Oh, yes, I'm a talker.

I have said the following words (true!):

- Dad
- Mom
- Sierra (when I see her photo!)
- Ball
- Bird
- Deer (lots and lots in our backyard and open space, including munchers at our tomato patch!)
- Progressive (just kidding! But the other above words are my utterances in the last few weeks!)

Now back to watching my "Up With People" video as I got out the karoke box out and am bellowing in the shower with mom.

Avi's Clear View of Life (and the backyard)

It's me again: Avi.

I'm a little pensive today. Sorry.

You'll have to excuse my self-reflections on life.

Or maybe you'll enjoy them? -- as, in truth, the photo here is me saying hi to Daddy through
the patio glass door.

Guess it's a good reflection on me!

Ha Ha. I'm so funny for 11 months young.

See ya at my B-day party at Joy's on 7/28, 5 pm sharp....and my sharp knife will cut the cheesecake.....and I
will INDEED blow out all the candle (singular!). Ha Ha.

*

Now back to birding. I'm looking for the CA Condor, an endangered species.

(By the way, I know spanking will not be in the vocabulary of my fun parents. The next ONLY spanking I'm
getting will be a spanking new Radio Flyer Wagon. Can't wait. That and my sandbox for the backyard.)

Sitting Room Only Ovation: Avi's Clapping Good Time

It's Avi again.

Know what?

I like to clap.

I discovered how to do this fun activity today when I heard Obama's plan to stop oil drilling off the coasts.

I agreed, so I clapped.

It was for the first time, as you'll see in the video (BELOW).

Just click on the sideways diamond on the left, OK? And turn up your computer's volume, if you wanna hear my Sitting Room Ovation (not Standing Room Ovation; I'm not standing yet, sorry.)

By the way:

My Dad and Mom showed me how to clap and I got it down after one Handy Dandy Lesson from Arthur Murray's Dance School where they, too, learned how to clap. :-)

Avi Answers The Big Question of "How's Life Going?":

Answer:

Swimmingly.

In fact, as Avi stated (while, languishing, poolside as his doting admirers (mommy & daddy-oh) bring him Iced Chai in 95 degree F heat on 6/20/08):

Avi's Talking Points at the pool (as he addressed the media):

"I love swimming. Who knew?" he exclaimed.

Avi added, without trepidation:

"In the womb I was scared.

But, here, in the Outer Womb World: Hey, life is fun.

I say:

What a country!"

Sad news to share

by Avi

I've had a pretty happy life up until now, but a week and a half ago, I lost my best friend and doggie Sierra. She was almost 14 years old. That seems real old to a 9-month baby like me. She was the sweetest, most gentle doggie I knew. Actually she was the only doggie I knew, and my mom assures me that she was the sweetest, best dog in the world.

Mom and dad miss her terribly, and I miss her soft fur, floppy ears, and waggy tail with which she used to tickle the top of my head. I hope some day we can get another doggie, but for now, I'll have to do my best to keep my mom's mind off of missing her first baby.

The Doctor Is In: Avi is a Patient (& Playful) Patient

By Avi

Guess what my doc (Ms. Andrea) gave me?

Answer: Got my nine-month (old/young) report card.

I checked out AOK, mind you.

I’m an 18.25 pound Flyweight Champion.

Don’t laugh.

That’s pretty good.

A month ago I was only 16 pounds.

So all the workouts and banana smoothie shakes paid off. Perhaps the 25 crunches per day did wonders, too.

Now I’m ready for the next challenge.

What’s that? – you say.

It’s not the 5K sprint across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sorry, I get enough trace metals from Mom’s good cookin’. I don’t need an exhaust overdose while exhausting myself as I run (and pant).

So, the moral of this story:

When you’re my age, it’s a see food diet.

I know: Gong and groaner joke.

And I’m still months away from eating Mom and Dad’s Alaskan salmon fun.

My mouth is watering already.

On Your Mark…Get Set…Crawl (!)

by Dad

As a first-time Dad, I am oblivious to any or many baby-related facts.

Sometimes my ignorance is bliss.

Take how I kinda sorta knew he would eventually crawl. Here’s this littl’ fella that I’m holding for weeks since his birth eight months ago, and I’m never letting him out of my arms unless he’s cradled on my breast with the “Bjorn” pack papoose carrier.

Then, suddenly, within a couple of weeks the cocoon opened. He opened his wings, pumped his legs a few times, and, presto: He’s crawling all over the house.

Guess it’s either time to clean the carpet or get a new one. Good luck, you’re saying, because you know we have a (shedding) dog. Got me there. Guess we’ll add weekly vacuuming to our overloaded repetoire.

Even better was Avi’s visit to the KinderMusik on Wednesday past. No session occurred the previous week due to Spring Break. But, this session, as soon as the bell rang, it was obvious that Avi was a Little Insect Transformed. You could say the metamorphosis of Avi began Tax Day, 2008.

Only I’m getting a rebate this year. It may sound trite, but I’m my own collection agency who is open for business with 24/7 curiosity and fascination with my Little Prince. My interest in him is accruing pride and joy as I watch change each day.

Besides, just to show you I’m not a doting New Dad whose mesmerization has deluded my judgment, you should have seen the other mothers likewise notice the evolution of Avi. “He crawls so well” was the least enthusiastic critique.

Well, my time’s up. Gotta get to the Craigslist and eBay ads. Bring credit card. Crawling baby means baby-proofing measures. Let the auction begin.

The scroll of our lives now reads non-stop: “It’s 11 am (or any other hour of the day), so do you know WHERE your Little Avi is located?

Actually, “no.” He was just here a minute ago. Somewhere. Then he crawled away.

Prince Avi’s KinderMusik Muse (in the key of "C")

Someone I told about 8-month old Avi attending a music and dance class reacted by saying “Only in California.”

Perhaps.

But the truth is KinderMusik exists nationwide -- and its a venue like many other kid-friendly studios/classrooms that introduce newborns to the joy of music -- with dancing the perfect complement as an integral component of each week’s class.

Avi loves it from start to finish.

Like son, like father.
It’s my favorite hour of the week, too. It's also the fastest hour of the week. Time flies when you're having fun (with your Littl' Prince fella).

When he gets there, the social excitement of the friendly, familiar, weekly faces takes him a moment to understand.

He’s so excited that his head might as well be on a swivel. Then he notices all the colorful toys, a dazzling overabundance that must overload his senses.

First, there’s the colorful parachute game. Up it goes, then down. Avi simply stares as the giant parasol acts like giant balloon that rises, then falls, over and over.

Next, it’s his favorite: bubble time. They cascade into the air from Melissa, the patient instructor with a voice of sweetness in the key of C. Avi watches the bubbles float through the air like confetti.
Then he goes after a couple. Pop. Pop. Some lay intact on the carpet. No more, as Avi swats them.

Then, it’s good-bye time. The hour is up. Avi does both a bow and curtsie for the group, then a final dip at his Dad’s behest. The music has stopped, but Avi leaves happy. I can tell his heart is still singing.

Bloomin’ Good Time For Avi at the Garden Store

Dateline: Garden Store USA - 70 degrees - sunny - 3/26/08

by Avi

*

It’s Avi here.

Today, I've got some brief sound bytes for you at the Garden Store.

Gotta get my fix of the odiferous glory of spring, rising to the occasion (as they say).

What’s behind me?

You cannot smell it through your computer screen?

The fragrance dropped my jaw -- it's so rank-ilicious (my new word, sorta like a cross between delicious and over-cool-smelling) that you gotta scratch and sniff your screen now.

Yes, it's lilac shrubs behind me in the photo.

Ridiculous that they bloom here now.

OK, now back to the garden store.

What kinda tomatoes do you recommend this year, folks? I was thinkin’ of some heirlooms.

Grammar Cop Avi Is On It? You Betcha

by Avi

You’re busy; I’m not.

So Prince Avi is NOT going to make you read a long muse here.

I’ve just got one point today, actually a beef (that lots of other babies prob share):

Why do they call it teething?

I’m only getting one tooth (my first one).

So it should be called “toothing.”

OK, end of my rant.

Now back to puttin’ everything I see or touch in my mouth.

Please note:

I don’t want to put some WA DC folks' foots in my mouth. They’ve already done that to themselves regularly for the last 7.2 years.

Avi's Morning Reverie

Often, when I rise to the day, I think:

What new fun will I discover in my Little Prince Avi today?

The pleasure is soon mine. The strange answer today is that
Avi has a delightful fear of abandonment.

Abandonment?
Pray tell, should not a parent tremble with dew drops of sweat at the thought?

No worries. Because (to oversimplify) I reckon everyone feels alone at times, especially babies.

But there’s a major problem with Avi’s case of the Lonely Blues.
He sings a high-decibel tune in the morning that is NOT exactly rhythmic to your sleeping pattern. In other words, we wish he’d sleep longer in the mornings.

We’ve been up for a short spell on most days when, suddenly, he realizes his role as the Omega Man in the world. What a feeling of singularity it must be for Prince Avi. His knights have fled the scene. Bedside acreage has expanded. The night has grown old.

In the early morning’s darkness, I can only imagine how Avi realizes his wool-lined castle is more house than he needs. He’s become its only tenant. His parents are no longer flanking him in his bedside cocoon. There’s only once choice for Avi Boy. So with all his might, it’s time to be All For One And One For All. Avi raises his ire.

It’s gutteral and punctual, yet, perhaps weirdly, I find his 10-gun morning reverie endearing. There’s certainly no need for the extra projection we’ve wired the house to accommodate from the Fisher Price monitor in the faraway kitchen. What a silly purchase that contraption turned out to be. Avi has no problem worrying that his ardent pleas will fall upon deaf ears. He’s ready for mommy’s breast.

Later, the whitecaps of panic calm. The morning light waxes into warm feelings for life again as Little Prince smiles and laughs. I’m left wondering: Is too much of a good thing bad? In other words, should we have taught Avi how to sleep in his vacant, abandoned, dust-gathering crib from the beginning? -- instead of letting him get used to the comfort of his parents’ presence. Has the ubiquity of our smothered love spoiled our little son?

For now, there’s no need to answer those questions. I’m not an expert in baby behavior 101. I’ll just do what my heart tells me is best. I’ll error on the side of his feelings for comfort.

Making sure the Avster knows we’re nearby to help is presently the best response. We want Avi to know we’re there for him at all times. That’s a good feeling – and, like the proverbial over protective parents that we are (join the club!), that’s the blanket of security we want Avi to wear.

Avi's Mime Time

Borrowing from a sports’ cliché, Avi has come into his own.

Or, rather, Avi has seen his reflection. He likes what he views. Mirrors have become his best friend.

Or, vice-versa, his best friend are mirrors. Avi’s not sure.

All he knows is that he’s optimistic about the future of multiplicity. The pair of eyes housed in animated mime is worth a second look. Transfixed, almost in a stupor, Avi stands tall while greeting his look-alike suitor. He raises an arm, pats his reflection, then swirls his hand in a circular motion as if cleaning a car’s windshield.

A moment later, Avi shouts with glee. He speaks, the reflection seems to listen, and Avi feels empowered. He keeps looking, then stares, turns catatonic. For a moment, his joy has hit the pause button.

Then you shift his little frame so that not just two, but four self images are present in the wall-length mirror that wraps around a corner. Now Avi’s beyond belief. He’s not sure what to do. But the largest image is the closest one. So let’s go there. Another giggle. Another swipe.
More finger stains on the mirror.

Avi’s hypnotized. I’ll worry later about when there will be time to find the window cleaner and rag.

(Note: To view a brief video on YouTube that shows Avi performing his mime act as reported above, go to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpAq8rLmw-g) (i.e., Copy and paste this Web site address into your browser to view the video of him.)
